It’s irrelevant how great your ideas, product, service, or offer is, if you can’t first make prospects look in your direction.
Prospects' attention is our primary focus, only then can we tell them how great we are or, more likely, sell them something.
Do I have your attention yet?
Good. Let’s teach you how to grab your audience by the throat and force them to read your stuff.
Attention Of The Reader Is Finite
No one can pay attention to everything.
That’s why we only end up paying attention to things that are relevant to us or give us a REALLY goddamn good reason to listen.
Your reader’s mind is extremely selective.
If your target audience is 18 year old men, you’re going to have to give them a really good reason to stop and pay attention instead of scrolling to the next TikTok of their favourite video game, or wobbling female body parts…
That’s some tough competition.
Immediately Grab The Reader By The Throat
We need to always keep in mind that even if we have the best product on the planet it’s still going to be hard to get the reader to give us the time of day.
That’s why it’s so critical to:
1) Grab their attention straight away.
2) Make sure you focus on why/how you can benefit their lives so that we can keep said attention.
So make it about THEM.
“Looking For X in (City/Town Name).” - “Looking For A Personal Trainer In Sydney”
“Do You Want To Improve Y?” - “Do You Want To Improve Your Driving?”
“Are You Z Looking For A?” - “Are You A Brisbane Homeowner Looking For A Gardner?”
Name them by group, location, age, interest, anything that separates them from the general population.
And by the way, never ever just focus on the general population.
It’s impossible to grab the attention of someone who doesn’t know your stuff is directed at them.
So make it PERSONAL.
Focus On The Conversation Going On In Your Ideal Clients Mind
Found a product recently that I was interested in.
A little GPS device that tracks your lap times and data while driving around a race circuit.
Open a YouTube video about the device and guess what they said in the first line…
“Are You Looking To Measure The Performance Of Your Car.”
And guess what happened in my mind?
I thought “Yes, that's me!” and I instantly raised my hand.
That is exactly what you want your audience to do every time they read or hear your headline.
Now that I know it’s for me and is something I want, I now give my full attention to the video to hear more about it.
Avoid Losing Their Attention By Following Up Strong
Now, you’ve done the hard part and got their attention.
DON’T LET IT SLIP.
One of the best things you can do next is to reiterate that it’s for them and give them more information to keep them engaged.
Imagine it like a One-Two punch. If you don’t land a strong second punch you’re not going to knock them out. (KO in a good way of course…)
Make sure that second punch is a fist filled with useful information directly relevant to the first line you just used to get that initial attention.
We can’t mess this part up because if we do, our prospects' minds will put us in the brain's filing cabinet under ‘Things Not Worth My Attention.’
Going back to my previous example.
The next thing the video says is “Whether you want to measure your car’s acceleration or analyse its performance around a race track there’s no better way to do it.”
Now the intro has done its job and gained my full attention because that’s EXACTLY what I want and what I was looking for.
From there you can focus on the more general information that is perhaps not as sexy but will still be of interest to people who are actually interested in your product/service.
Remember, make it all about them.
‘What’s In It For Me’ is how you should be attacking this if your goal is to grab the reader’s attention immediately AND keep it.
