The vast majority of small businesses do the absolute bare minimum when it comes to marketing.
The extent of their marketing skills is making a single ad and then sitting around waiting for amazing results.
Issue here is that you’re trying to sell at first contact which, for the majority of products (even if they’re outstanding), just isn’t going to happen.
At the end of this article you’re going to be a better marketer than 99% of your competition. Guaranteed.
Why Won’t The First Contact Approach Work?
Selling at first contact (or one-step lead generation) has one major problem.
Which is that there are several different reasons as to why your audience won’t buy when they see your ad.
They could be talking on the phone, they could be in the middle of doing something, they may have to leave to pick the kids up from school, they could be trying to do something else on their phone.
It could be ANYTHING.
If you only ever use the one-step method you’re leaving soooooo much money on the table.
Someone could be genuinely interested and the only reason they don’t buy is because you didn’t set up your second line of defence.
What’s My Other Option?
Think of two-step lead gen like playing the long game.
Twice as long but 10x more effective.
We first want to provide some kind of value in our initial ad.
For example, it could be showing our audience potential solutions to a problem they have through a video.
This way we’re getting the attention of our target audience while simultaneously offering them real value and benefiting their lives.
After that we can focus on selling our product and telling the audience what they need to do next.
Two-Step Lead Generation Has Several Benefits
Not only will two-step lead generation 10x your conversion rate, it’ll also give you so many other advantages.
One of those is that it filters out the people who don’t care for your product.
Maybe not what you wanted to hear, less people doesn’t sound good right?
But getting rid of the people who aren’t interested means we can focus on those who are.
Therefore we’ll get way more sales while also using our marketing budget in a way that maximises our ROAS (Return on ad spend).
Another great benefit is that people actually get to know you and your company before they spend money with you.Instead of buying from some random anonymous being they actually know a bit about the company.
Recently I’ve been looking at some of the more expensive niche fragrances.
Got a sample of a Creed fragrance and on the card it tells a story.
Where they’re from, how they started, who runs it, and what they do to make a successful fragrance brand.
And what does that do?
Gets you interested, excited, breaks the fourth wall, and makes you want to know more.
You now feel as if you have some sort of relationship with the brand and that makes you more inclined to actually purchase from them.
It’s way more likely I’m going to get that fragrance in comparison to a one-step style ad like Dior’s Sauvage ad with guitars, muscle cars, a desert, and Johnny Depp.
No connection, no reason for me to be interested or buy.
So, give it a try.
You’ll be so far ahead of your competitors especially if you know how to leverage social media effectively.
